New Year's Resolution...?

I got in a conversation with a friend today about exercise. You see, he is an avid runner- I am not. After thoroughly discussing the fact that I do not run, he asked me what I do for exercise. Hmmm... Well.... I don't. He seemed very surprised that one could live without any form of exercise.
.
This has never really bothered me before, but for some odd reason it bothered me today. So, I made a New Year's Resolution to exercise- Starting now.
.
True to my word, this evening I went into the living room and laid on the floor for some crunches and leg lifts, etc. (give me a break, I'm a beginner, ok?) As soon as I began my new exercise routine, my little niecelet and nephew wanted to know what I was up to. After I explained, they too laid on the floor and began doing crunches and leg lifts, etc.
.
My other niece bragged that she can do 100 leg lifts- I explained that it was easier for her because her legs are so small that they don't weigh anything so they are easier to lift. I told her if she really wanted to get some exercise, she could lift my leg 100 times!
.
Apparently she lacked a real desire to work-out as she did not take me up on the offer. My other little niecelet, however, jumped right up and began lifting my leg and counting. Then my nephew joined in and periodically lifted my other leg. Up and down it went....56....78....89.....100! She then collapsed to the floor for a well deserved rest.
.
We decided that we shall make a routine of it- exercises every night before they go to bed. So it looks like I am turning over a new leaf! (But at this rate, I'm not sure how much good it will do me....)

  2. I used to go to an exercise class where the machines lifted your legs and sat you up. I loved it. It took no effort on my part. Of course it didn't do any good, either. Thanks for the comment on my blog! It's fun to connect with readers.

  3. Katie! I hope your lack of blogging is because you're working on your book! One book I've really liked is "The Nighttime Novelist" by Joseph Bates. I've read about 50 books on writing (I love to read about it!) and my all time favorites are "Write Away" by Elizabeth George, "Bird by Bird" by Anne Lamott, and "Writing Down the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg. Good luck!

  4. For a few years growing up as a slightly chubby kid in an otherwise fit family, I always felt that same way- that exercise wasn't my thing. Once i was about 14-15 it all sort of "kicked in" and i got all into soccer and martial arts and stuff.
But with running, it took a girl i was dating about a year ago challenging me to run a half-marathon with her. I had NEVER considered such an atrocious thing, but i decided to do it. I trained for about 5 months, and it was grueling, but somehow, somewhere deep within, i broke through whatever threshold of resistance the body has and started to enjoy it! it was nuts.
So while i'm not as consistent at it as i would like, somehow i was transformed into a runner, and i love it now. it's wild. What a nice little evolution.
